Sculpture Road Tour – and Freedom Ride - 27th July 2003

On the 27th July the Fat Boy Sculpture will make a unique road tour from the foundry in Braintree to the Ace Café and onto the Tate Modern and returning to the Ace Café via the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

The Ace Café is the original haunt of the “Ton Up Boys” in the 1960s. It has been fully refurbished to its original design and was reopened two years ago. It is now host to many motorcycle clubs. The 27th July is the “Easy Rider Review” day and they are expecting up to 1,000 Harleys!

The sculpture, cast in bronze and weighing over 3 tons, will sit on the back of an open trailer. It will be mounted on a specially designed base which will provide its only support allowing the public an unimpeded view throughout the tour.

We are expecting over 100 Harleys to escort this exciting ride.

The purpose of the ride is to promote our art and raise funds to help transport it to the USA to help celebrate 100 years of Harley-Davidson. All profits will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The motorbike is a symbol of personal freedom. Personal freedom is a concept that transcends, age, sex, sexuality, religion, ethic background and colour. In short it is the right of every human being and a right that is denied to everyone.

“They’ll talk to ya and talk to ya and talk to ya about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it’s gonna scare ‘em.” Quote from Easy Rider 1969.

Our sculpture is the worldly embodiment of the concept of personal freedom – religious, political, cultural and spiritual.
